The 2022 Indian Chief is ready to roll onto the pages of Thunder Press.

Indian Motorcycles has reinvented the Chief, changing it into a lighter and more airy layout. With a steel-tube frame and dual rear shocks, it’s like an Indian version of the dearly departed Harley-Davidson Dyna platform.

The Chief is actually three Chiefs. The standard model has cast aluminum wheels and is joined by a Bobber version and the windshield-and-bags-equipped Super Chief, both fitted with wire-spoke wheels. Pricing begins at a very reasonable $14,499 and stretches up to $18,499 for the Super Chief.

Each new Chief features full LED lighting, cruise control, ride modes, and keyless ignition. Standard versions use the existing 111-cubic-inch Thunderstroke V-Twin.

The high-end Dark Horse and Limited Chiefs use a touchscreen TFT instrument panel as an upgrade from the traditional gauge on the regular models, as well as a bigger 116-inch mill.

We sampled the three models of the new Chief platform over two days in the desert locales around Sedona, Arizona. These new Indians proved to have the performance and dynamic chops to run with the big dogs, and their handsome styling has received widespread praise. Stay tuned for a full review in the May issue of Thunder Press

  1. I really like riding Dyna’s, I have a 2003 FXD and a 2014 FDXL. I recently had some serious health issues and sold my 2016 Road King and will soon be selling my 2011 Road King. Not only are the Dyna’s lighter in weight I just like the feel of a cruiser underneath me. I was disappointed when Harley did away with the line and am not excited about the new Softail line up at all. I’ll keep my two Dyna’s.
