Sturgis, South Dakota—The Sturgis Buffalo Chip announced that the award-winning Student Build Challenge Legends Ride bike built by students at Sturgis Brown High School has won two more awards at the 25th annual Black Hills Motorcycle Show April 13-14at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, South Dakota. Students who customized this bike took home first place in the Full Custom Bagger category and Best Paint Overall at the Black Hills Show. The one-of-a-kind motorcycle previously won first place for the Full Custom Bagger Open class and the award for Overall Best Display at the 26th annual Donnie Smith Show in St. Paul, Minnesota, May 23-24.
The students were guided by Keith Terry of Terry Components, Randy and Nick Cramer of Dakota V-Twin, and Instructors Chad Hedderman and Bill Johnson. Parts were donated by world-class contributors and, in a complete teardown and rebuild, the students customized a stock Road King that has now taken multiple top honors at two of the industry’s top motorcycle competitions.
The students and staff from Sturgis Brown High School began transforming the Harley- Davidson bike from a Road King to a Road Glide in January. With help from the many sponsors, students and staff worked tirelessly after school and on weekends, as well as over Christmas and Spring Break, to complete the bike, putting in well over 377 combined staff and student man-hours on the motorcycle.
Students involved in the 2013 Student Build Challenge included Caden Packer, Casey Packer, David Owen, Hannah Beauvais, Richard White, Steve Remington and Wyatt Harwood. All will be further recognized for their work during the spring graduation ceremonies. (Also be on the lookout for the June issues of Thunder Press for the Donnie Smith Bike Show feature that includes a sidebar piece on Hannah Beauvais.)
“The Buffalo Chip has a tremendous appreciation for the very progressive-minded administration and teaching staff at Sturgis Brown High School, as well as Keith Terry, Randy and Nick Cramer of Dakota V-Twin, and all the amazing sponsors who made this high school mentorship dream a reality,” said Rod Woodruff of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.
The Legends Ride Bike will be auctioned off on August 5, 2013, at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip in support of the annual Legends Ride event. The Legends Ride will take place on Monday August 5, where riders can join celebrities for a ride that has raised over $260,000 for local charities since 2008 and includes admission to the Buffalo Chip Campground where Kid Rock will perform later that night.
