John K. Lehman, the 60-year-old founder of Lehman Trikes, passed away on
January 5 in Arizona. It is suspected that his untimely death was heart failure brought on by an embolism. John is survived by his wife Linda, his son Quinten, daughter Leann, three sisters—Gladys, Linda and Carol—and three grandchildren.
Called the father of the modern trike, John created a trike in 1984 so his wife Linda could carry one of their children while riding. That first three-wheeled conveyance attracted so much interest that John founded Lehman Industries. John was joined by longtime friend Larry Strilchuk in 1993 and together they formed Lehman Trikes.
John and Larry started a program called the Good Turn Trike that annually provides a trike to a person that cannot ride a traditional two-wheeled motorcycle due to injury, amputation or other medical conditions. He has also helped raised money for terminally ill children through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Kids & Chrome and other charities.
In 2009, John was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame, and is one of the most respected motorcyclists in the industry. His care and concern for those less fortunate as well as his warm and friendly demeanor will leave a huge gap in the motorcycle industry. John, you will be missed. You were a class act.
