June 9, 2014—Land-speed racing’s premier sanctioning body, The Southern California Timing Association and Bonneville Nationals Inc., are holding their largest event of the season—the 2014 SpeedWeek at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah on August 9-15. The weeklong event will also mark the celebration of 100 years of racing on the salt flats.
Looking to be the biggest event to date with well over 500 entries and four courses, SpeedWeek 2014 is drawing teams from all over the world, though the majority of the contingent comes from the United States. Entries vary from four-wheeled streamliners with potential speeds of over 400 mph, to motorcycles with less than 50cc engines that will struggle to reach 50 mph. Each vehicle is unique and represents the hot-rod spirit of the event. Every one of them hopes to establish an official SCTA Bonneville record in the multitude of classes available.
SpeedWeek 2014 is entering its 66th year of operation. Located on the Bonneville salt flats only two hours from Salt Lake City and 15 minutes east of Wendover on I-80, spectators take the Bonneville Speedway Exit. Entry to the area is controlled with day passes costing $20, and week passes are $50. Spectators, racers and crew are supported by a variety of local and out-of-state vendors from food and drinks to racing safety equipment and sunglasses. In addition to vendors, the SCTA/BNI also sells branded merchandise and souvenirs at the event and via the SCTA-BNI website.
The Southern California Timing Association has been dedicated to the safe running of land-speed time trials for the past 76 years and is the oldest running land-speed organization in the world. An amateur organization and volunteer run, the SCTA/BNI is the premier sanctioning body for land-speed events worldwide. The SCTA rulebook and inspection criteria is the basis for all other time trial events, from as far a field as Australia’s Lake Gardiner to local U.S.-based events. It is the standard by which others base themselves.
