Gone are the days when Harley-Davidson included a basic toolkit with your motorcycle purchase. When I bought my first Harley, I knew I wanted to carry tools, and before I had a chance to figure out what I needed, someone near and dear to me bought me a CruzTOOLS tool kit. It had pretty much everything I could possibly need to tend to my Sportster. Then, when I bought my FXD, I purchased another CruzTOOLS tool kit. When I acquired the Switchback, I began sharing two tool kits among three bikes, which was problematic because sometimes I didn’t remember to move the kit from one bike to another. While deciding whether to buy a third kit, I saw the CruzTOOLS SPEEDKIT, a very compact kit that includes enough technician-grade tools to cover the basics.

The SPEEDKIT tools come in a zippered nylon pouch, and at 7″ x 2″ x 2″ it is compact enough to stow nearly anywhere. There are three versions available; H-D, Metric-JAS and Metric-EU. The H-D kit contains a 1/2″ x 9/16″ rubber-grip open-end wrench, a combination 9/16″ box-end and 5/8″ open-end wrench, a two-in-one 5/8″ x 13/16″ spark plug wrench with separate lever, and mini quick-change flathead/Phillips screwdriver with T20 x T25 star (torx) and T27 x T30 star (torx) bits. Hex (Allen) wrenches include 1/8″, 5/32″, 3/16″, ¼” and 5/16″. The enclosed nut drivers are 10mm, 3/8″ and 7/16″. Also included are a 10–50 psi tire gauge and 5.5″ slip-joint pliers. The entire kit weighs only 1.5 pounds, and there is even a little more room inside the pouch for extras such as a few zip ties, an extra fuse and some Loctite.

I did a once-over on my 2000 FXD, trying out the various drivers and wrenches, and I found that every easily accessible fastener that one might need to deal with on the road, i.e., bolts and screws holding mirrors, handlebar housings and riser, seat screw, battery connectors and more, had a matching tool in the kit. The tools are what CruzTOOLS calls “technician quality,” meaning that, although they’re not Snap-on, they are more than adequate for the task. I can honestly say that in the nearly 15 years I’ve been using CruzTOOLS products, I’ve never had a tool break, rust or malfunction.

Even if you perform extensive research, you’d be hard pressed to find a comparable OEM or aftermarket toolkit for even twice the price of the SPEEDKIT. And since the tools in the SPEEDKIT are the same quality as those in the larger CruzTOOLS kits, I expect the SPEEDKIT to last for many years.
