SPEARFISH, S.D.–South Dakota Department of Transportation officials have announced they hope to finish construction on a four-mile stretch of eastbound Interstate 90 through Spearfish before the start of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on August 5-11.

According to the Black Hills Pioneer, a long winter coupled with spring and summer storms have delayed progress 0n the $12.4 million project. Crews for the South Dakota Department of Transportation hope to have the four-mile stretch of I-90 from Exits 10 to 14 opened up by July 24 before the close to 500,000 motorcyclists converge on the area for the rally.

Construction will continue after the rally by August 12, when crews will begin reconstructing the eastbound lanes from Exits 14 to 17. The project will continue in 2014 with reconstruction of the westbound lanes, and Exit 14 will be revamped in 2015.
