The weather seems to dominate a major part of the news as of late. And while parts of Texas have experienced some icy moments, generally speaking the conditions here are much better for riding than a majority of the nation. But I’ll try not to brag about that too much… Congratulations go out to Mancuso Harley-Davidson, which is celebrating 30 years as a Houston dealership. Founder Johnny Mancuso started his two-wheel career with a small shop attached to his home in Sharpstown, a suburb of Houston. His reputation for producing some very fast V-twins spread quickly and in 1979 he relocated to an official storefront in North Houston, American Speed. But with limited space available, this independent shop was quickly replaced by a much larger building on Houston’s North Loop where the company acquired their Harley franchise. In 2003, a second dealership was opened in Northwest Houston, Crossroads Harley-Davidson. Since then the company has expanded to include four additional Team Mancuso Powersports locations across the Houston area with the six total businesses presently representing 16 different motorcycle marques. Not too bad for a guy starting out in his garage… Adam Smith’s Texas Harley-Davidson kicked off the New Year with a Lunch Ride at noon on January 3. And then they repeated it the following Friday—and then again for the next three Fridays that month. It must be popular since it is now listed on the dealership calendar every Friday throughout 2014. Along with that weekly ride-to-eat event, they also presented a Taquito Tuesday, Nacho Wednesday, a Crawfish Boil Saturday and a Full Tank Dinner Sunday during February. (Seems to be a pattern shaping up here.) The shop is located on Airport Freeway in Bedford, so stop by for a visit. And come hungry… I received a press release on January 23 from Terri Sheets with the Republic of Texas Biker Rally announcing that the “Red Rocker” Sammy Hagar will headline this year’s event, June 12–15. Hagar will take to the main stage at the Travis County Expo Center in Austin Saturday, June 14 and is expected to draw record crowds. The ROT Rally is celebrating its 19th anniversary and shows no sign of slowing down… On January 25, Boozefighters MC Chapter 126 held a Turkey Shoot at Skeeter’s Bar in Trinity. The day proved to be warm enough for riding with plenty of participants vying for the event’s cash prizes. And no, I haven’t a clue as to the best way to safely carry a 12-gauge strapped to a bike. But this group of Texans has apparently figured it out… On April 10, Rick Fairless with Strokers Dallas is presenting his 5th annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Waterchase Golf Course in Fort Worth. The entry fee is $100 and includes contests, gift bags and an awards ceremony at the course. All proceeds raised go to benefit the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Call Jenn at 214.357.0707 for additional details… Carol Ford with Hawgs of Texas wanted me to remind everyone about this year’s rally coming up on April 23–27. Once again the HOT Rally will be held at the Colorado County Fairgrounds in Columbus and promises bike games, a bike show, karaoke and line-dancing contests (that’s different), a movie night (Easy Rider: The Ride Back) and plenty of after-hours Krew parties. The HOT Rally is a proud supporter of our soldiers through Operation Military Embrace, so check out all the action by going to… And the Buzzards Roost Cycle Shop is also supporting our military with their 2nd annual Benefit Run for Homeless Vets & BBQ Cook-Off on April 25–27. Located in Marietta, the Buzzards Roost is a combination bike shop and campground so they are no strangers to entertaining folks. There will be live music, a bike show, raffles, vendors and an IBCA-sanctioned barbecue cook-off. All monies raised will go to aid programs that directly benefit veterans in need in northeast Texas. The website address is a long one, Or just call Numbnuts (really?) at 903.285.3506. That’s all for me. I’m headed out the door for a quick afternoon ride before the weather… ah, crap—it’s sleeting. So much for my Texas bragging.
